PRE-HUNG DOOR COMPONENTS
All pre-hung door units, whether interior or exterior, consist of the same essential components.
The door is attached to the hinge jamb with hinges. Lock and latch hardware is not generally considered part of the pre-hung door as it is installed after the unit has been installed in the opening. In addition to these components, some units will include casing on one or both sides, and exterior units can have a sill installed.
Generally, if a door unit is assembled when shipped from the manufacturer to its destination, it is referred to as a “pre-hung door.” If the components are machined but not assembled when shipped, it is known as a K.D. (Knock Down) Unit.

LOCK HEIGHT
Lock height is the distance from the top of the door to the center of the lock bore. Standard lock heights are 44” on 6’8”, 46” on 7’0” doors, and 60” on 8’0” doors. Because of variations in door length (i.e., doors are not necessarily the precise length their labeling would indicate), lock height is always measured from the top of the door. This ensures that proper header clearance is maintained and that the lock hardware aligns with the machining and hardware in the strike jamb.

BACKSET The backset is the distance a lock is centered from the front edge of the door. For residential applications, the backset is 2-3/8” or 2- 3/4”. The commercial market backsets are usually 2-3/4” or 5”.

HINGE PATTERN
Hinge pattern is usually described as a dimension in inches from the top of the door to the top of the top hinge and the bottom of the door to the bottom of the bottom hinge. Examples of this are “7-11”, “8-8”, and “9-9”
7”
3-1/2”
36-1/4”
29-1/4”
The more common and accurate method is to measure from the top of the door to the top of each hinge.
65-1/2”
The top and bottom hinge location remains constant concerning the door stile, regardless of the door height. For example, if a 6’ 8” door with a 7-11 hinge pattern has been cut down to 6’ 7” for floor covering clearance, the dimension from the bottom of the door to the bottom hinge would be 10”.

Hinge backset is the distance from the top of the jamb to the edge of the hinge mortise and from the face of the door to the edge of the mortise. The hinge backset must be correct to ensure a clearance (reveal) between the face of the door and the doorstop on the jamb when the door is closed. If weather-stripping is used on the jamb, the hinge backset may have to be adjusted to compensate for the thickness of the weather-stripping. HINGE BACKSET (REVEAL)
HINGE MORTISE DIMENSIONS
When setting the dimensions of a mortise on a door machine, the hinge reveal or hinge dimension is used. For example, a Magnum can be set to control the reveal, and the automated machines can be adjusted using the hinge mortise dimensions. The mortise is set equal distance into the door and jamb and typically 1-1/8” on a 3-1/2” hinge used on a 1-3/8” thick interior door.

DOOR CONSTRUCTION
HOLLOW CORE
There are three most common types of door constructions. “Hollow Core” doors are used exclusively for interior applications. “Solid Core” and “Stile and Rail” doors are used for exterior entrance doors but may also be found in some interior applications. Hollow Core and Solid Core doors are sometimes called “flush” or “molded” doors. Stile and Rail doors are what most people consider “traditional style doors” and are used as entrance doors where added aesthetics are desired. Stile and Rail doors are made up of several individual pieces of solid wood that are carefully fit and glued together. The materials used can vary from door to door and manufacturer to manufacturer, but Pine, Douglas Fir, Sapele Mahogany, Red Oak, MDF, and White Oak are the most common. The value of a stile and Rail door is in its aesthetic appeal. Doors are available in widths from 1’0” to 4’0” in 2” increments. The standard length for our doors is 6’8” or 80”. Seven and 8-foot doors are also available. Custom heights of 9 or 10 feet are available in wood or MDF only.

DOOR BEVEL Any door can be manufactured to full width with no bevel. All molded and wood doors are either ordered beveled or beveled in-house to meet our specs of 3/16” undersized on the high side of the 3-degree bevel. Typically, all tolerances on door dimensions can be +/- 1/16”. All wood doors come in full size from the manufacturer. Before a wood door is machined, it has to be beveled (e.g. 3/0 wood door would measure 36” before being beveled, and 35 13/16” after it’s beveled. A molded door can be made full width or undersized, but the most common way a door is ordered is to be pre-fit and undersized 3/16” (e.g., a 3/0 molded door would measure 35 13/16”). Typically, all molded interior doors are manufactured pre-fit and double beveled 3/16”. Meaning the door starts at 36” and then 3/16” is beveled off. Both sides of the door are beveled 3 degrees. The overall measurement would be 35 13/16” on the high side of the bevel.
3 o BEVEL 35 13/16” B2S = BEVEL 2-SIDES
Birch, Hardboard, and Lauan doors are only beveled on one side and pre-fit 3/16”. One side of the door is square and the other side is beveled 3/16”. The door is always bored on the beveled side.

o HINGE AT 3 ON MACHINE
When installing hinges, it's crucial to position the high side of the bevel towards the hinge side. Our specially designed door lines can route a hinge pocket at a precise 3-degree angle, ensuring the hinge sits flush against the door's edge for a seamless appearance. While Tucker Door’s high-speed door lines excel in efficiency, they are limited to routing hinge pockets at a 90-degree angle. In this configuration, the top of the hinge aligns flush with the door’s surface while the bottom extends outward. Be mindful that when running your finger along the bottom edge of the hinge, you will notice it protruding from the door's stile.
